Whoopi Goldberg’s Sister Act 3 finds its writer and director

The following Sister act movie has found its creative team. With Whoopi goldberg on board to come back, Sister Act 3 was previously announced by Disney as an upcoming exclusive title to air on Disney +. While it was known that Goldberg would return, it is now reported that Tim Federle has signed on to direct the sequel with Madhuri Shekar writing the script. Goldberg also produces alongside Tyler Perry and Tom Leonardis.

By deadline, Federle was chosen in part to lead the third Sister act film based on the success of the award-winning GLAAD series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a show he created and produced by the executive. Inspired by the Musical High School franchise, the series was developed exclusively for Disney + and has just been renewed for a third season. Federle co-wrote 2017’s Ferdinand which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars and Golden Globes.

Tim Federle also received praise from executives at Disney based on his director’s cut of the upcoming Disney + movie Better Nate Than Ever starring Lisa Kudrow. All of this in mind put Federle at the top of the wishlist to lead Sister Act 3, because they would have considered him the right fit for the job for this “happy, musical and nostalgic project with a new approach”. The project pairs her with writer Madhuri Shekar, whose credits include the film Evil eye and the next Netflix series The problem of the three bodies.

No information has been revealed about the conspiracy of Sister Act 3. All that is really known at the moment is that Whoopi Goldberg will be back as Deloris Van Cartier, the salon singer who ends up joining a convent to disguise herself from the mobsters in pursuit of her. Goldberg also teased that some of the kids from Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit will return, making special appearances in Sister Act 3.

In the original version Sister act, written by Paul Rudnick and directed by Emile Ardolino, singer Deloris Van Cartier (Goldberg) is placed in a witness protection program after seeing a gangster murder an informant. She was given a new life as a nun, where she took charge of the choir and really took advantage of her time at the convent. The film was a huge box office hit when it was released in 1992.

Whoopi Goldberg returned as Deloris in the 1993s Sister Act 2: Back to the habit. This time, she goes back to being a nun as Sister Mary Clarence to help teach music to troubled teens in hopes of preventing their school from closing. The sequel made a far cry from the original’s profits, although it did build a bit of a cult following over the following years. There had been calls to Sister Act 3 happen for many years, and producer Tyler Perry has been trying for a long time to finally do it.

There had been rumors of the sequel for a while, but it was made official in December on Disney Investor Day. At the time, the company announced that Sister Act 3 was a hit for Disney + with Whoopi Goldberg already signed. The only other detail revealed at the time was that Tyler Perry would also be producing the feature film with Whoopi. This news comes to us from Deadline.
