‘Uncharted’ Writer’s Next Marvel Game Could Be a ‘Fantastic Four’ Title

Marvel has been really banging with video games lately, with Insomniac’s Spider-Man PC launch being basically the talk of the town for the past few days. But aside from their own Spider-Man sequel, the Wolverine game, and other great titles from other studios, there’s another one coming that might be a little interesting.

A Stan Lee-signed copy of ‘Fantastic Four #555’ (Marvel Comics Group, May 2008) is on display at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, California on November 13, 2018. – The comic is part of a selection of 20 associated works to Lee’s Comic Book Universe which will be sold November 16-17 at Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery and online. Stan Lee, who was the editor of Marvel Comics, died Nov. 12 in Los Angeles at the age of 95.

PlayStation Lifestyle reports that several rumors indicate that the next Marvel game will be a “Fantastic Four” title. And it’s the one run by “Uncharted” creator Amy Hennig in her studio, no less. Hennig’s Skydance New Media recently unveiled its partnership with Marvel Comics, with the studio’s next game actually part of the Disney Marvel showcase scheduled for September 9th.

Rumor has it that the former “Uncharted” writer’s next Marvel game is indeed a “Fantastic Four” title for several reasons. First, Skydance reportedly announced that their new AAA project is a story-heavy action-adventure game that will feature an “ensemble.” This means that it won’t focus on a single hero as the protagonist and will likely feature the entire party equally in terms of narrative importance and overall screen time.

Another rumor, this time from filmmaker Kevin Smith’s “Fatman Beyond” podcast, says the game will feature not only the Fantastic Four, but also Ant-Man. But other than that, there are hardly any other rumored details – let alone confirmed.

Either way, Amy Hennig is especially excited to be partnering with the pop culture giant for her upcoming triple-A project. Here’s an excerpt from a statement she released earlier this year (via Video Games Chronicle ):

“The Marvel Universe embodies all the action, mystery and thrill of the pulp adventure genre that I love and lends itself perfectly to an interactive experience. It’s an honor to be able to tell an original story with all of humanity. , complexity and humor that makes Marvel characters so enduring and allows our players to embody the heroes they love.”

No release date or window has been given for Skydance Media’s Marvel game.

Low expectations

Marvel games really haven’t had much success lately – even in the last few years. Many games based on the famous comic book franchise were decried and never sold well, and games based on DC’s competing universe dominated in their place (i.e. the “Batman Arkham” and the “Injustice” series, to name a few. ).

The only exceptions to this rule? Insomniac’s “Spider-Man” and Square Enix’s “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy”, to name a few. As such, Skydance’s triple-A Marvel game might face low expectations given this fact. But low expectations doesn’t mean people don’t expect this game to be good.

Example, Amy Hennig herself. She was instrumental in creating not only the “Uncharted” series, but also “Jak and Daxter”: two of the most iconic franchises in the history of the video game industry. Safe to say, players are eagerly awaiting what kind of original story she writes next.
