Dutch football journalist Valentijn Driessen of De Telegraaf has shed some light on the future of Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn as we approach the end of the season.

Spurs spent £27million (BBC) to sign the talented Dutch winger in January 2020 and although he started his career in north London in spectacular fashion, things didn’t quite work out for him. him.

Bergwijn has spent just over two years at Tottenham so far but has only started in the Premier League 25 times. It’s not enough at all for a player as talented as him, but he can’t do much to change things either.

The 24-year-old, described as a player with “special characteristics” by Antonio Conte, was set to leave Spurs in January with Ajax heavily linked with a move for him. It didn’t materialize back then, but there’s a good chance it will happen this summer.

Steven Bergwijn wants to leave Tottenham

A return to Holland has been on the cards for Bergwijn for a few months now and Dutch giants Ajax view him as a perfect candidate for their team. Driessen is sure the Dutchman wants this move as well.

The journalist said on De Telegraaf’s Kick-Off podcast: “He also understood that an adventure abroad is not everything.

“Even if you score a few goals, you have no certainty of playing. He also wants to be part of the Dutch national team.

“I think he wants to go back to Amsterdam on his knees.”

TBR view:

Bergwijn is an extremely talented player, there’s no doubt about it. However, will he ever overtake Son Heung-min or Dejan Kulusevski in the pecking order? We do not think so.

This leaves the 24-year-old in a very difficult position.

With the World Cup approaching at the end of this year, Bergwijn needs regular playing time to have a chance of making the Dutch national team.

Staying at Spurs just won’t help him, which makes leaving this summer the best option for him.
