Sun reporter Martin Lipton has claimed Tottenham could consider selling Matt Doherty if he receives no interest in Emerson Royal.

Moving to Spurs from Wolves in 2020, Doherty has endured a mixed period in north London as he prepares to enter his third season with the club.

The 30-year-old has often struggled to work his way through the starting lineup but found form under Antonio Conte last season before a knee late in the campaign forced him out.

While making his comeback during the pre-season period and playing left-back, he was the only outfielder to remain on the bench for their 2-1 win over Rangers last week.

And with the addition of talented winger Djed Spence, Lipton thinks Spurs will be looking more to out Emerson, but says they wouldn’t hesitate to take advantage of Doherty should a suitable offer arrive.

He told Off The Ball: “I thought he was struggling to be the player he had been at Wolves or actually wearing an Irish shirt.

“And then suddenly last season for a few months he was absolutely outstanding. He’s certainly a much better attacking player than Emerson Royal.

“I think Doherty will definitely do it, if he’s fit and he’s right I think he would probably start the season as a first-choice right-back or right-back. That doesn’t mean it will stay there.

“And it all depends and it presupposes they’re going to sell someone who will be, I suspect Emerson Royal, but if they got an offer for Doherty and not Royal, they might decide to cash in on that. Just because ‘they now have Spence added to the team.

Boosts web opinion

Tottenham are now quite saturated when it comes to the right-back position, especially when you can also add Lucas Moura to the players who can be deployed there.

Emerson will likely be the one they want to offload the most as Doherty can play quite effectively on the opposite side. However, both aren’t necessarily good enough, so they would consider selling both if a decent offer came their way.
