Leeds: Reporter drops Albert Elis complaint

Leeds will “watch closely” winger Alberth Elis, journalist Pete O’Rourke told GiveMeSport.

The truth

The 26-year-old spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Bordeaux in Ligue 1 from parent club Boavista, with the French side having exercised the option to sign him permanently for a fee of £5.4million.

However, his future at the club could be in doubt after the Girondins were demoted to the third tier of the French pyramid ‘due to their financial situation’. Bordeaux had finished bottom of the top flight and were expecting to play Ligue 2 football next season, but that made their misery much worse.

Elis played most of his football on the right flank last season, but also featured as a centre-forward on seven occasions.

The last

O’Rourke said Leeds will wait for an “opportunity” to pounce and step up their interest in Elis, who has 53 caps for Honduras.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I’m sure Leeds will follow his situation closely, and if the opportunity arises, they can offer him that opportunity to move up to the Premier League.”

The verdict

Should Leeds look to capitalize on Bordeaux’s woes and swoop in for Elis?

His nine-goal comeback for a side that backed the table is impressive in itself, and that’s even before you consider he’s played just 1,415 minutes in 20 top appearances. Doing the math, he found the net every 157 minutes on average.

According to FBRef, Elis has a similar profile to West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen, providing a significant goal threat from outside. Indeed, according to a translated tweet from journalist Zach Lowy, ‘The Little Panther’ (as he is dubbed) simply’keep scoring‘.

As uncertainty continues to abound over Raphinha’s future at Elland Road and amid chaos at Bordeaux, Leeds could do much worse than consider a swoop for the Honduran.
