“Inter’s Bastoni is Italy’s most talented young defender but needs to gain experience”

Italian journalist Paolo Condo believes that Inter center-back Alessandro Bastoni is the most talented of the younger generation of Italian defenders, but that he still needs to play more and improve his game.

Writing for Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica in today’s print edition, the reporter felt that the 22-year-old has shown his qualities for the Italian national team but needs to learn to do better in certain situations.

Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini trusted Bastoni to kick off the two Nations League matches, a semi-final against Spain and a third-place game against Belgium.

The Nerazzurri man’s performances impressed overall, especially against France, but he was also at fault for the opening goal of the loss against Spain, when he failed to cut a center from where the Spanish striker Ferran Torres found the back of the net.

Condo believes that despite occasional mistakes like this, he has everything it takes to become a key defenseman for the Azzurri in the future.

“Bonucci and Chiellini were decisive in winning the European Championship, and the hope is that for at least a year their performance will not decline,” he wrote.

“But between now and the World Cup, it would be good if Bastoni, the most gifted of the new generation, still plays to accumulate the experience necessary to assess situations such as Oyarzabal’s cross for Torres,” continued- he. “Details like this always make the difference. “
