IHC takes action late at night after journalist’s detention – Newspaper
ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist Imran Riaz Khan was arrested by Attock police on the outskirts of Islamabad on Tuesday night as he headed to the federal capital to secure pre-arrest bail from the High Court of Islamabad (IHC) in a treason case registered against him.
Meanwhile, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah issued notices to the Chief of Police and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad regarding the journalist’s detention. The judge told them to appear in the High Court at 10am today. The IHC Chief Justice’s opinion came after a contempt motion was filed by Mr Khan’s legal team late on Tuesday evening.
He named the chiefs of police of Islamabad and Punjab as respondents as well as the chief commissioner of the federal capital.
The petition was received by the Registrar’s Office late at night, in accordance with established standard operating procedure for receiving petitions on emerging issues and those related to civic liberty, habeas corpus and imminent threat to the life.
Sources within the Police Department said that a contingent of Attock Police supported by an Elite Force team arrested the journalist as he was “going to Islamabad” and transferred him to the Attack City Police Station.
They said a case was filed against the journalist at the city police station on June 25 under sections 505-1 (C), 505 (2), 501, 109 of the Pakistani penal code and six sections different from the Electronic Crimes Prevention Act. (PECA) 2016.
The journalist also shared a video of himself at the time of the arrest in which he could be seen sitting in his car surrounded by police officers. “You took my car and my weapons, registered 20 FIR against me, now you want to arrest me too, go ahead and arrest me,” he said as he got out of the car to surrender.
The arrest of the high-ranking journalist was condemned by Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The PTI president tweeted that the country is “sinking into fascism just to make our nation accept an imported government”. He urged everyone, especially the media, to stand up against “fascism”, he added.
Earlier in the day, the head of the PTI also mentioned Imran Riaz during his Facebook live speech and said that journalists who support the PTI are intimidated by the authorities.
