“I am not a politician. I am an educator.

He has just completed his first 100 days as superintendent of the Houston Independent School District. Millard House II says many of those days have been spent listening to parents, teachers and staff about their priorities. “I’m proud of what we’ve done to get us to this particular point and we have a plan for what the future will look like.” That future, says House, will form the basis of a five-year strategic plan that will lead HISD to higher and more equitable quality of education throughout the district. He says he is aware of the high level of attention given to school boards by activists who seek to influence the way children are taught. “Politics has turned into public education like we’ve never seen it before,” he said. “But I am not a politician. I am an educator and my job is to develop the plans, to make sure that we execute the plans to do what is best for the children.

Thanksgiving Day Volunteers (KPRC)

Need volunteers for the 43rd annual Super Feast event

Stephanie Lewis, regional manager of the City Wide Club of America, is the guest of Houston Newsmakers this week and says they have made increased arrangements for those who wish to sit down for a meal. “Last year we saw that a lot of people couldn’t be served because they couldn’t drive,” she said. “So this year we are incorporating on a limited scale, sit and sup or dinner in person. We bring that back! She says those wishing to volunteer should call (713) 752-2582.

Unique Atlas Scholars program accepts applications

To say that Atlas Scholars is a once in a lifetime opportunity is an understatement! Once accepted into the three-year program, fellows receive mentorship throughout the year, exposure to high-pressure real-world professional environments AND compensation during their summers. Craig Taylor is the Founder and CEO of Iapetus Holdings, a privately held LLC that focuses on energy service companies.

Atlas Scholars was his idea to provide an opportunity for underserved youth that he didn’t have. Zion Duplechain is a junior in high school at the HISD Energy Institute and is entering his third year as an Atlas Fellow. “If you lack motivation, this program will provide that and you have to hold yourself accountable as well,” he said. “I would say if you want to join this program, be prepared to be pushed to be held accountable for your actions. December 1 is the opening of the application period for Grade 9 students. See more details below.
