How politicians reacted after the ballot box came out of the elections in Germany | World news
BERLIN (Reuters) – Reactions from senior German politicians and others after the exit polls for Sunday’s national elections https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/germans-vote-close-election-decide-merkel -successor-2021-09 -25 showed that Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Conservatives and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats were practically tied.
OLAF SCHOLZ, CANDIDATE SPD CHANCELLOR
âThe voters of this country have decided that the SPD must rise to the top, and it is a great success. It’s going to be a long election night, that’s for sure. But it is also certain that many have put their cross by the SPD because they want the next Chancellor of Germany to be called Olaf Scholz.
“Let’s wait for the final result, then we’ll get to work.”
ARMIN LASCHET, CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE FOR THE CHANCELLOR

“It was clear to us that without the incumbent’s bonus, it would be a more open, tighter and more difficult election campaign. It’s a neck and neck race.
“We will do everything to form a government led by the Conservatives, because Germany needs a forward-looking coalition that modernizes our country.”
SPD MINISTER HUBERTUS HEIL:
“It is a spectacular success. It shows the confidence of the citizens in Olaf Scholz … The SPD is back, we are again in our place.”
ANNALENA BAERBOCK, GREENS CANDIDATE FOR THE CHANCELLOR
“We wanted more. We didn’t get there, in part due to mistakes early in the campaign – mistakes I made.”
PAUL ZIEMIAK, DEMOCRAT CHRISTIAN SECRETARY GENERAL:
“It hurts … It’s clear: the losses are raw, they are bitter. But we have a credo in the CDU – first the country, then the party. From the numbers we have now, there is a possibility for the future – oriented coalition of CDU / CSU, FDP and Greens which promotes stability, security and climate protection. “
JULIAN REICHELT, CHIEF EDITOR OF BILD, GERMANY’S BEST-SELLING NEWSPAPER:
“(candidate for chancellor) Armin Laschet stands there with a result which is a historic disaster for the CDU.”
